These Religious Types Give Me the Willies

Now, I'm a pretty religious guy myself, and no fan of abortion.

But when I hear a fellow Christian spouting off like this, "It has been told by the prophets in the land that there is a president coming out of Texas, a Burning Bush,' (the Rev. James) Nesbit prayed (at this week's March for Life in D.C.). 'He will deal with abortion in the land. We ask you to give him an executive order and mantle him and give him a mandate with the fear of the Lord."....

...well, it just gives me the willies. Seriously - this guy claiming that God is somehow annointing political figures here on earth is not so far removed from the Iranian mullahs claiming that the Lord looks with favor upon those who kill the wicked infidels.

Any time that anyone claims to know that God has caused something to happen is cause for concern. If there is a God, no one can speak for him and no one can claim to have him on their side. When politicians and newsmakers make such claims, everything they say after that should be suspect.

I'm not presumptious enough to pretend to speak for the big guy, but I think I can say with some confidence that he isn't all that concerned with our political squabbles. If the practice of infanticide goes away it won't be because God annointed one president or judge to make it so. Today we all (I hope) agree that slavery was morally reprehensible. However, 150 years ago "God fear'n" people were on both sides of that argument. The answer to ending abortion isn't just passing a law but rather ensuring that the majority of people understand right from wrong. We have laws against many things (murder, stealing, etc) and some people still commit those acts. However, the great majority of people don't because they understand it would be wrong. I can only hope that 150 years from now people look back at us and wonder how we could be so uncivilized just as we look back at slave owners and those who did nothing about it.
